USA ”needs” Greenland, says Donald Trump. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says that it is ”an obvious no”, both from Denmark and the inhabitants of the island.
– They want to be Greenlanders and not Americans, she says, and are supported by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M).
It’s no secret that Donald Trump is interested in Greenland, which is part of Denmark.
During Sunday, the American president said in an interview with The Atlantic, that USA ”needs” Greenland, and repeated the same thing a little later aboard Air Force One.
– Right now Greenland is teeming with Russian and Chinese ships everywhere. We need Greenland from a national security point of view, the EU needs us to get Greenland and the EU knows that, Trump told reporters.
Kristersson’s support: ”Fully out”
To TV2 then Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says it’s ”completely pointless” to talk about the US needing Greenland. She also underlined that Denmark is part of NATO.
– The United States has no right to annex any of the three countries of the Danish Empire.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) joins behind Denmark.
”Only Denmark and Greenland have the right to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland. Sweden is fully up for our neighboring country.”
”Want to go back to the status quo”
On Monday evening, the Greenlanders themselves gave their picture of the situation, via the island’s leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen. At a press conference, he said that they had long had good cooperation with the United States and will continue to strive for it.
– We are open to having a dialogue with them, but now communication via the media will be enough. We would like a direct line to resume good cooperation, and go back to the status quo, he said according to Denmark’s radio.
He is not worried that the US will act in a similar way to Venezuela.
– It is not right to compare ourselves to Venezuela, we have a democratic society. We are not in a situation where we believe that a takeover of the country can take place overnight.
Carl Bildt: ”It’s forged plans”
Following the U.S. attack on Venezuela, Katie Miller, former spokesperson for defunct ”Doge” and married to White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, also published an attention-grabbing post on X.
It showed image in Greenland with the text: ”Snart”.
Former Foreign Minister Carl Bildt (M) participated in Aktuellt on Sunday evening:
– One can probably assume that plans are being made in the White House to try to take over Greenland in one way or another. I think it’s easier said than done, but that plans are forged, I think unfortunately we have to start from that.
