The EU must put its foot down against Donald Trump. That’s what the Swedish Social Democrats think – after the revelation that the US wants to take control of Greenland.
“Trump behaves like Putin”, says Morgan Johansson (S), who at the same time demands that Ulf Kristersson express support for Denmark.
US President-elect Donald Trump does not rule out military or economic pressure to take control of Greenland.
In addition to that, he also wants to loosen his grip on the Panama Canal and for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States.
The games have attracted a lot of attention in several European countries.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has tried to calm the situation down. In an interview with Denmark’s radio, she says that the US is Denmark’s most important ally, while at the same time emphasizing that the Greenlanders must be respected.
Foreign Minister’s comment
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has simultaneously demanded that Trump respect the EU’s “sovereign borders” and Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard has also had to comment on the situation:
“It is Denmark and Greenland that decide over themselves,” she writes in a comment.
But according to the Social Democrats, the Swedish government’s response to Trump’s outburst has been far too weak. The party’s foreign policy spokesperson Morgan Johansson is now calling on Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to strongly highlight.
Morgan Johansson: “End the Christmas break now”
As far as Kristersson is concerned, the Christmas break is over now. This is too big a matter to just leave it to written comments from the Foreign Ministry. This is a matter that the prime minister must comment on, and he must give his fellow prime minister in Denmark his full support from Sweden’s side.
According to Morgan Johansson, Donald Trump is behaving in the same way as Vladimir Putin did when he claimed other countries’ territories in Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.
This is exactly what we have seen in Europe throughout history. When leaders behave in this way, you have to take it seriously.
After all, Trump is a person who works in such a way that strength is the only language he understands. And therefore one must not show weakness in a situation like this. Here, the international community and the EU must put their foot down and give Denmark full support in this situation.
