In a debate article in the New York Times, George Clooney appeals to Joe Biden to drop out of the election campaign and leave room for a new candidate. Otherwise, the Democrats will lose the election, he fears.
“We can bury our heads in the sand and pray for a miracle in November, or we can tell the truth.”
So writes George Clooney in a debate article in the New York Times on Wednesday. This just one month after, together with Barbra Streisand and Julia Roberts, among others, they raised just under SEK 280 million for Biden’s campaign at a gala in Los Angeles. The large sum made the fundraiser the largest ever for a single Democratic presidential candidate.
In his article, Clooney expresses concern about Biden’s advanced age, arguing that the president is not the same man as when he ran in 2020. Clooney specifically refers to the high-profile debate between Biden and Trump held earlier in June.
“Was he tired? Yes. A cold? Perhaps. We are all terrified of the possibility of Trump getting another round that we chose to ignore all the warning signs. Is it fair to point this out? It has to be. It’s about age. Nothing more. It is irreversible. We will not win in November with this president. That’s not just my opinion, it’s the opinion of every senator, congressman and governor I’ve spoken to privately. Every single one, regardless of what he or she says in public.”
Clooney is also calling on other top Democrats, such as Nancy Pelosi and Chuch Schumer, to get Joe Biden to step aside.
George Clooney is not alone among celebrity Democrats in calling for Biden’s defection. Earlier this week, actor Rob Reiner and author Stephen King, among others, posted on X where they called on Biden to drop out.
