Sweden can acquire naval mines – several NATO countries united

It may be relevant for Sweden to buy in and store sea mines, together with eight other NATO countries. It is clear after Defense Minister Pål Jonsson (M) signed a letter of intent at the NATO meeting in Washington.

The Minister of Defense, Pål Jonson (M), writes on X that the letter of intent opens the door for ”future joint development of minor”.

Behind the initiative is the German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius. He tells Reuters mines are necessary to prevent Russian expansion in the Baltic Sea.

– We have very recently seen Russia trying to expand its territorial waters outside Kaliningrad. We are all clear that we will not allow it, he says.

In May, Estonia accused Russian border guards of removing navigation buoys from the Estonian side of the Narva River, which separates the two countries.

The other eight NATO countries that want to procure sea mines are Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany.

The German defense minister says during the meeting that joint procurement has several advantages. Among other things, reduced costs and shared maintenance.
