The Swedish government stops all cooperation with Georgia

Sweden's government has decided to stop all direct government cooperation with Georgia.

This weekend there were elections in Georgia and the incumbent government party Georgian Dream won.

They got a majority in parliament.

The election result has since been criticized by international election observers as well as by the domestic opposition.

Sweden’s government has decided to stop all direct government cooperation with Georgia. However, the decision must have been made before the election.

Aid Minister Benjamin Dousa says that to DN.

“This is, among other things, about cooperation between the tax authorities, which we judge is not appropriate under the current circumstances”, says the minister for aid to the newspaper.

In the country’s capital, Tblisi, things have been uneasy.

Thousands of people have gathered in front of the government building in Tbilisi, Georgia to protest against the government.

This is reported by TT.

The country’s president Salomé Zourabichvili, who mainly has a ceremonial role,
accuses Russia of infiltrating the election and has called for people to protest on Monday.

Many have also heeded the call.

Russia: “Puppet”

The Russians are critical of Zourabichvili, calling her a puppet calling for a coup d’état.

Dmitry Medvedev tweets it.

The election in Georgia was described in advance as a fateful election, where the result was judged to determine whether the Caucasian country would be governed closer to the EU or Russia.

In recent years, the government in Tbilisi has introduced a series of Russian-inspired laws that severely restrict civil society and fundamental rights, which are judged to undermine the country’s EU ambitions.

Celebrate the election results

On Monday, Prime Minister Irakli Kobachidze claims that the goal is still to join the EU by 2030.
State-controlled media in Georgia hail the election results and refer to OSCE observers, but without mentioning the reported irregularities.
