When Anton Nilsson in Helsingborg came back home to Sweden after a longer stay abroad, the apartment was a complete dump. The nice man who rented the apartment had transformed it into something indescribable.
Now Anton is supported by hundreds of people who want to contribute to the cleaning work and new furniture.
When Anton Nilsson, 32, last week put the keys in the lock to his home in Helsingborg, he didn’t know what to expect. After a longer stay abroad, he had rented out the apartment, which he had rented himself for almost ten years.
When he got home, he was greeted by complete chaos – faeces outside the toilet and drifts of litter and rubbish.
See the trash chaos in Anton Nilsson’s apartment in the clip above.
Tenant had good references
The nice man who rented the apartment had good references and could pay the rent.
I love this apartment. Now it has turned into a dump! He doesn’t seem to have cleaned here during the 20 months I had it sublet,
says Anton Nilsson about his apartment.
Friends have started fundraising
Now his best friends have started a fundraiser to help him try to fix everything.
I spoke to my insurance company, but they couldn’t help me.
The apartment needs to be cleaned but his home insurance doesn’t cover it.
I cannot comment on an individual case, but in general it is the case that when you rent out your apartment, you have given permission for the person to be in their home and then not all elements of the home insurance apply, for example theft and vandalism, says Per Widemar, CEO of ICA Försäkring, which is Anton’s insurance company.
Home insurance does not always apply
According to Peter Stark, a lawyer at Konsumenternas Försäkringsbyrå, it is common for tenants not to know that home insurance does not apply in the event of damage or theft when subletting.
It’s pretty common.
If you rent to foreign nationals via a rental site, insurance may be included which can provide some protection, but the conditions vary. If you rent to a Swedish citizen, it is always preferable that they take out their own home insurance, he says.
What can be done to protect yourself?
You must make sure to sign a rental contract with the person who will live in the home and make sure to include in the contract that the person concerned must take out their own home insurance. A good piece of advice is also to agree on the deposit in addition to the rent, says Peter Stark.
